Message from Stefan Kipp EMD of AlBihouth
Welcome to the first project newsletter from AlBihouth, the company established to oversee the construction, commissioning and operations of the Abu Dhabi Waste to Energy Plant. We will be producing monthly newsletters throughout the project, sharing updates on our progress, providing information on key milestones and achievements, and keeping you briefed about our HSE performance. The ADWtE project is a key element in achieving the UAEs sustainability commitments, and we are looking forward to delivering Abu Dhabi’s first energy from waste facility into full operations in summer 2027. Solid waste from the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will be used as fuel to produce steam, to drive a steam turbine generator. The 80 megawatts (MW) of power produced will be fed directly into Abu Dhabi’s power grid for use in homes and businesses across the Emirate. The project has been procured by TADWEER and EWEC, and project investors include Kanadevia Inova, Marubeni and JOIN, the Japanese Oversees Infrastructure Investment Corporation. Our EPC Contractor is a consortium between ALEC BUTEC and Kanadevia Inova (KVi), formally known as Hitachi Zosen Inova.
Project Summary to Date
Early works got underway at our project site on the 10th August 2024, and since then our EPC contractor has been excavating and constructing the main waste bunker structure, the floors of the Boiler House and Flue Gas Treatment halls, the Administration building and the Warehouse and Maintenance buildings. Four large tower cranes will be used throughout the construction period and to date the civil construction works are proceeding well. We will be starting the erection of the process steel in June 2025, and project manpower will increase significantly thereafter.
To prevent sub-surface ground water from flooding the waste bunker excavation, steel sheets called sheet piles were installed around the work area. When the excavation for the waste bunker was completed, we poured the waste bunker floor and began building the bunker walls. To date the waste bunker walls are @ +23 metres, with some further works needed to add the roof and waste crane support structures.
We have just received to site the Feed Hopper and Ram Feeder structures for line 2, and EPC will now be erecting the supporting structures to enable these large components to be lifted into position.

HSE Update
The health, safety and welfare of all persons at site, and the maintenance of strict environmental controls are our primary responsibilities during the project. Our EPC contractor has a designated team of HSE staff to oversee safe working, and senior management from EPC and I join a weekly management safety tour. This important initiative ensures we have regular direct visibility of works going on at site, and it shows the workforce the importance that management gives to ensuring a safe workplace for everyone. On the 29th of May 2025 we were delighted to host the One Million Hours without LTI Award ceremony at site.
